Distinguished and Famous people from Atherton

Atherton has connections with a Queensland premier's childhood and a composer whose music became instantly recognisable on British television. One grew up locally; the other's birthplace was here before education and work took him elsewhere.

🤝 Peter Beattie

Peter Beattie was born in Sydney but grew up with his grandmother in Atherton. He attended Atherton State School and Atherton State High School, leaving the latter in 1970 as school captain and dux. University study and legal work followed before a political career that took him to the Queensland premiership. His archived school records and personal papers preserve those local years, giving a detailed starting point for a public life later centred on Brisbane.

🎼 Ron Grainer

Composer Ron Grainer was born in Atherton in 1922. He learnt violin as a child, served in the RAAF and later studied at the New South Wales State Conservatorium. Moving to Britain, he wrote television themes including Maigret, Steptoe and Son and Doctor Who. The first two brought Ivor Novello awards. Delia Derbyshire created the original electronic recording of his Doctor Who score at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, giving the composition its extraordinary sound.

🎖️ Clem Cummings

Clem Cummings was born at Atherton in 1908 and developed his early working and sporting life in Cairns. Wartime service took him into command of the 2/9th Battalion during demanding operations at Milne Bay, Buna and Shaggy Ridge. Colleagues remembered calm resolve rather than flamboyance. Back in civilian life he resumed business work and put considerable energy into returned-service, youth and sporting organisations. Atherton is his birthplace, while Cairns and later Canberra were important adult homes. Keeping those places distinct gives the Tablelands its documented connection without claiming that every chapter of his military and community career happened locally.

🔬 John Ryley

John Ryley was born at Atherton in 1926 and returned to the district as a veterinary officer after university training. Field work preceded laboratory research into animal disease, breeding and nutrition. With G. C. Simmons he published important findings on leptospirosis in pigs, then moved into broader agricultural research and administration. He also taught and supported younger veterinarians through professional organisations and university work. Atherton’s connection joins his birthplace with an actual early veterinary posting, giving practical local experience a place in a career that later helped shape research for Queensland’s livestock industries.
